Morgan Stanley encourages, recognizes and rewards employee volunteering. All employees are encouraged to volunteer to help their communities at least 24 hours in a year through the What a Difference a Day Makes program and our Global Volunteer Month each June. The programs encompass all categories of volunteer work, including ongoing activities at our Children’s Health Initiative partners. Workplace Giving The generous employees of Morgan Stanley give annually through the firm’s employee charitable giving campaign, the Annual Appeal. In 2007, employees contributed more than $8mn to benefit local nonprofit organizations and the core programs of the Morgan Stanley Foundation. Charitable Spending Accounts To increase the reach and impact of our employees’ giving, Morgan Stanley offers a unique initiative, called Charitable Spending Accounts. Employees who contribute through the Annual Appeal are eligible to receive up to $4,000 in corporate funds that they can direct to US charities. Unlike traditional ‘matching gifts’ programs, Charitable Spending Accounts offer employees the option of directing corporate dollars towards all US charities, and not only those that they have personally funded. Participating employees may also make as many allocations (of at least $25) with their accounts as they would like during each year. Key Initiatives Children’s Health We invest in innovations in pediatric care, so that more children can get the healthy start they need for consistent and meaningful achievement in life. Morgan Stanley has a successful 30-year relationship with the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York Presbyterian that has helped improve both medical research and treatment for children in the greater New York area. Building on this success, we have expanded our outreach to other international hospital partners, most recently the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, in order to create centers of pediatric excellence that will broaden access to best-of-breed care for the underserved in regions throughout the world. Morgan Stanley is also the first major corporate supporter of Grow Clinics, specialty operations that target families with children suffering from medical complications associated with malnourishment, primarily due to poverty. Scholarships Morgan Stanley has a long-standing commitment to investing in students and faculty in minority and underserved communities. We focus on career development through scholarships, fellowships and internships at both the undergraduate and graduate level. We give priority to programs serving diverse student populations and to those that offer access to opportunities in the financial services sector. Our programs include the Richard B. Fisher Scholars Program and the Morgan Stanley Fellowship Program, college and graduate school scholarship/internship initiatives for minorities, and the Morgan Stanley Professorship initiative, that funds that funds the teaching and research of an elite group of business professors representing the Historically Black College and University network. The program enhances the scholars' ability to incorporate practical experience into both academic research and classroom teaching so they can better prepare students for careers on Wall Street. Volunteer Incentive Program Employees impact virtually all of the Firm’s charitable outreach, because heavy and active participation in charitable programs not only benefits our work environment, it also amplifies Morgan Stanley’s corporate efforts to support the communities where we live and work. Through the Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP), the Morgan Stanley Foundation supports hundreds of local health and social service organizations served by our employees. The VIP enables us to reach out to hundreds of local, community-based organizations that may not have access to traditional sources of funding. We are extremely proud of our employees' generous contributions of time and talent, and the VIP is designed to complement these efforts with financial grants ranging in size from $500 to $10,000. Note: Applications for VIP grants must be initiated by the employee involved. Funding Guidelines and Restrictions How to Apply Morgan Stanley initiates the vast majority of our grants. As such, Community Affairs does not accept unsolicited proposals. If you think that your organization is a good match for the programs described above, and within the restrictions and geographic scope laid out below, please send no longer than a two-page letter of inquiry to the address below describing your program, highlighting its mission, goals, numbers served, measurement strategies and geographic scope. If your organization is being considered for funding you will be asked to provide additional information. Geographic Scope Morgan Stanley Community Affairs grantmaking and programs, with few exceptions, generally benefit U.S.-based charities. We fund national initiatives and those serving multiple cities across the United States. Our support of local initiatives (serving only one metropolitan area or state) is generally restricted to those organizations on behalf of which our employees are active volunteers – and is therefore coordinated through our Volunteer Incentive Program.
