Your Opportunity as a Summer Analyst in Global Capital Markets

An overview of this program’s objectives and how you can benefit

As the nexus between Investment Banking and Sales & Trading, Global Capital Markets (GCM) comprises traditional market coverage and underwriting groups, as well as a number of product groups focused on providing customized capital structure solutions for our clients. You will be working with our clients on complex, innovative financing and risk management solutions in the fast-paced environment of a trading floor with immediate access to market information. Our objective is to provide you with unique insight into the firm and the capital-raising process. The Summer Program consists of classroom training, placement within a GCM group, and networking events. The environment is market-driven and reflects that of a trading "desk" where you might sit right next to your Managing Director.

The Summer Analyst Program in Global Capital Markets
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Our Summer Analyst Program lasts ten weeks from late May to early August.  You will be placed in one of our main departments in our headquarters in New York City: Equity Capital Markets (NYC and Menlo Park), Fixed Income Capital Markets, or Leveraged Finance & Acquisitions. The roles and responsibilities vary by group. You will gain a deep understanding of the role that an Analyst can play. Summer Analysts will not only get exposure to the "deal" process - including business development, origination, structuring, and execution - but also will gain an understanding of how the different areas of the bank, including Corporate Finance, Sales & Trading, Research, and M&A, interact. We host numerous events, including outings with the various product areas, to help you get to know Morgan Stanley professionals.

Launching Your Career
The initial training that you receive on starting the program

Your Summer Analyst career begins in late May or early June with a five-day training program at our headquarters in New York City. The program consists of a variety of presentations and exercises led by experts ranging from professors and industry leaders to current analysts and senior bankers. It includes course work in accounting, industry and product-specific training, introduction to Morgan Stanley proprietary analytical tools, and an overall introduction to the firm. During the training program, you will work in small groups with your classmates and work on exercises that you will encounter on the job.

Developing Your Career
What you can anticipate as you make progress and after completing the program

After completing the weeklong training program, you will spend the summer in one of our specific groups building a foundation of financial skills and a solid understanding of the markets. You will have a junior and senior mentor to aid you in your development and provide greater exposure to GCM and the firm.  As a Summer Analyst, you will be encouraged to take on responsibility quickly and help bridge the gap before the new class of Analysts starts. Senior bankers regularly host training sessions on various topics, from new trends in the marketplace to group overviews. To ensure that you are honing your skills and receiving timely feedback on your performance, you will participate in a mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluation.
