Morgan Stanley Prime Brokerage lies within the Equity Financing Products Department. Prime Brokerage provides outsourced services and solutions to hedge fund and other active managers. This includes many of the world's best money managers who run the world's largest, most complex and most successful hedge funds.  Prime Brokerage's service offering includes multiasset class -based financing, securities lending, capital introductions, business consulting, content delivery, talent introductions and client service. We are considered one of the top providers within  our peer group due to the strength of our client relationships, state of the art technology, and our differentiated suite of client solutions.

The Prime Brokerage Summer Analyst Program is ten weeks long and offers a unique insight into a Wall Street firm. The Prime Brokerage Program offers excellent networking opportunities. Summer Analysts are assigned a mentor to help them acclimate to the firm, and have daily exposure to senior management during information sessions, one-on-one meetings and learning lunches.  Summer Analysts also attend numerous events, including outings with the various areas of Prime Brokerage, to help them get to know the Morgan Stanley professionals. Please note that the Summer Analyst Program is the main opportunity for college graduates to receive an offer as a full-time Analyst within Prime Brokerage, as the division does not actively participate on campus for full-time analyst recruiting.

How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Prime Brokerage provides a range of core and specialized services that offers talented graduates the opportunity to build a rewarding career at the leading edge of financial innovation.  You will have the opportunity to operate as a strategic partner with our hedge fund clients.

The Prime Brokerage Summer Analyst Program consists of classroom training, three three-week rotations, senior management speaker series, networking events and a mid-summer review. To provide them with broad exposure to the diverse products and functions throughout Prime Brokerage, Summer Analysts rotate to various areas within the Prime Brokerage Division.

Within the different business functions of Prime Brokerage the following roles exist for Summer Analysts joining the program:

  • Client Service Provide operations support for hedge fund managers by reviewing the daily reconciliation exceptions, ensuring clearance and settlement of trades, analyzing corporate events, and servicing ad hoc inquiries and requests from clients.
  • Sales Create pitch books and perform analysis of business opportunities, learn how hedge funds generate returns, and how the financial community services hedge funds.
  • Client Consulting Services Help new funds launch with a range of go-live services and best practices consulting, including finding office space, vendor systems, and project management for the fund launch process.
  • Marketing Conduct data analysis, produce industry research presentations, and create sales materials.
  • Technology Help draft project plans, specifications, testing plans, and implementation schedules for the planning and execution of internal workflow tools, Prime Brokerage websites, and other client technology.
  • Risk Review client portfolio risk reports and contribute to projects reviewing operational best practices, policies and procedures, and regulatory initiatives.
  • Capital Introductions Provide analytical support for the team as it plans and executes marketing plans to connect clients with potential investors, gather news and market intelligence, and update and maintain the databases that support these activities.
  • Finance Help to analyze trends in client profitability, including fees charged to clients, costs of internal and external financing, and direct and allocated costs.

Launching Your Career
The initial training that you receive on starting the program

The program lasts ten weeks, with an initial week of training and six weeks of focused exposure to three functional groups within Prime Brokerage (two weeks each devoted to Client Service, Capital Introductions and Sales).   Weeks eight and nine will include rotations to other groups within Prime Brokerage including Consulting, Risk, Finance, Prime Brokerage Content and Marketing, and Documentation.  The final week will provide interns with a day-long rotation within Sales and Trading and four days of additional focus in their area of choice within Prime Brokerage.  Exposure to Senior Management within both Prime Brokerage and the Equity division is facilitated through lunch and learn lectures throughout the summer.

Developing Your Career
What you can anticipate as you make progress and after completing the program

At the end of the summer, every exceptional Summer Analyst has the opportunity to receive a full-time offer. Each Summer Analyst receives a mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluation from both their manager and Human Resources. The structure of the Summer Program allows Summer Analysts to gain an in-depth understanding of the business and the role of an Analyst.

Requirements

Analysts need to be in the final year of their undergraduate degree with an outstanding academic record and  an interest in hedge funds and the financial markets.

Selection Process

Candidates are encouraged to attend various Morgan Stanley Sales & Trading/Prime Brokerage pre-interview events, career fairs, and/or presentations. Selected applicants will be invited to interview both on campus and in our offices.
