The Summer Analyst Program in Prime Brokerage
How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Summer Analysts joining Prime Brokerage will participate in a ten-week program alongside Sales & Trading Summer Analysts.  Our Summer Analysts are treated as a top priority because we know they will produce the future full-time Analyst classes. Summer Analysts have the opportunity to develop and master the analytical, quantitative, and interpersonal skills they will need for consideration for our full time opportunities.  Please note that the Prime Brokerage Summer Analyst Program is the main opportunity for college graduates to receive an offer as a full-time Analyst within Prime Brokerage, as the division does not actively participate on campus for full-time analyst recruiting.

The Prime Brokerage Summer Analyst Program consists of classroom training followed by a rotational program allowing for broad exposure to the diverse products and functions throughout Prime Brokerage. The Program also offers excellent networking opportunities. Summer Analysts are assigned a mentor to help them acclimate to the firm, and have daily exposure to senior management during information sessions, one-on-one meetings and learning lunches.  Summer Analysts also attend numerous events, including outings with the various areas of Prime Brokerage, to help them get to know the Morgan Stanley professionals.

Within the different business functions of Prime Brokerage the following roles exist for Summer Analysts joining the program:

  • Client Service Provide operations support for hedge fund managers by reviewing the daily reconciliation exceptions, ensuring clearance and settlement of trades, analyzing corporate events, and servicing ad hoc inquiries and requests from clients.
  • Sales Create pitch books and perform analysis of business opportunities, learn how hedge funds generate returns, and how the financial community services hedge funds.
  • Client Consulting Services Help new funds launch with a range of go-live services and best practices consulting, including finding office space, vendor systems, and project management for the fund launch process.
  • Marketing Conduct data analysis, produce industry research presentations, and create sales materials.
  • Technology Help draft project plans, specifications, testing plans, and implementation schedules for the planning and execution of internal workflow tools, Prime Brokerage websites, and other client technology.
  • Risk Review client portfolio risk reports and contribute to projects reviewing operational best practices, policies and procedures, and regulatory initiatives.
  • Capital Introductions Provide analytical support for the team as it plans and executes marketing plans to connect clients with potential investors, gather news and market intelligence, and update and maintain the databases that support these activities.
  • Finance Help to analyze trends in client profitability, including fees charged to clients, costs of internal and external financing, and direct and allocated costs.

Developing Your Career
What you can anticipate as you make progress and after completing the program

At Morgan Stanley, Summer Analysts begin with a one-day orientation to the firm where they are introduced to the firm's businesses and learn about what it is like to be an employee at Morgan Stanley.  Sales and Trading Summer Analysts then attend divisional specific training where they learn core skills essential to a successful summer.  The curriculum includes daily market updates, business-specific overviews, and basic product and technical training.  Summer Analysts are placed on desks where they get hands-on experience and work alongside experts within our industry.

Summer Analysts will learn how they are progressing during the summer through an evaluation process with their managers, recruiting program leaders and/or Human Resources.  Interns will also be encouraged to share feedback on their experience during the summer.

At the end of the summer, every exceptional Summer Analyst has the opportunity to receive a full-time offer.  The structure of the Summer Program allows Summer Analysts to gain an in-depth understanding of the business and the role of an Analyst.
