The Summer Analyst Program in Human Resources

An Overview of the Division:

Morgan Stanley's Human Resources Department provides human resources support and strategy for all of Morgan Stanley's businesses worldwide.  The division is comprised of coverage and product teams. Coverage teams partner with business units to deliver human resources services including Recruiting, Data Analysis, Employee Relations, Compensation Analysis and Performance Management. Human Resources product groups include Compensation, Benefits, Firmwide Data and Learning and Development, further supporting these coverage teams.

How the program works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

The Summer Analyst Program offers an intensive hands-on introduction to Human Resources at Morgan Stanley.  It is a 10-week long program designed to provide broad exposure to various functions across the Human Resources division, as well as in-depth exposure to a specific division, depending on whether the Summer Analyst is placed into a coverage or product role. In addition to the role the Summer Analyst performs at their desk, throughout the program, Analysts will attend various training sessions designed to facilitate professional development, enhance their HR skill set and increase knowledge of the firm.

Examples of Summer Analyst Placements:

  • Data & Compensation - Summer Analysts in Data and Compensation roles would support a specific business within the Firm on a host of human resources issues, including headcount, compensation, data analysis, compensation and expense analysis, and any other ad hoc reports requested by senior management or other HR groups.  A strong candidate for this type of role would possess excellent analytical skills and a thorough attention to detail, be able to collect and summarize multiple streams of data into meaningful reports, and be comfortable with the use of Microsoft Excel and other HR systems.
  • Recruiting - Summer Analysts in Recruiting would support Lateral, Campus, or Diversity Recruiting by assisting with the full recruitment life-cycle.  Lateral recruiting is responsible for bringing experienced talent into the firm in a cost-effective and efficient manner.  Campus Recruiting teams partner with all of our business units to recruit and retain talented undergraduates for our Analyst programs and masters students for our Associate programs, both Full Time and for Summer Internships.  The Diversity Recruiting Team aids with both lateral and campus recruiting to further the Firm's commitment to bringing in a diverse employee population.  The role of an Analyst in Recruiting might include, but is not limited to: developing new recruiting strategies, meeting with the business to assess hiring needs, posting jobs externally and to campuses, planning and attending internship events and/or diversity recruiting events, screening candidates, and assisting with the eventual placement of a hire into the appropriate role.
  • Generalist - Summer Analysts placed in a Generalist role would work with their coverage team to partner with divisional managers and advise their clients to better mitigate overall risk to the Firm.  Analysts would be exposed to a variety of processes including Performance Management, Talent Management, ad-hoc employee relations issues or client inquiries, and Year-End Compensation Processes.  A strong candidate for this type of role would possess a strong client service orientation, the ability to exercise sound judgment, be an effective problem solver, and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Learning and Development - Summer Analysts placed in Learning and Development would be a part of the organization known as Morgan Stanley University, or MSU.  Some Analysts may be assigned to an MSU Coverage team and would be responsible for assisting in the development and execution of on-going training for employees at all levels.  Other Learning and Development Analysts will work on an MSU On-Boarding team and would assist in organizing and delivering first rate new hire programs that help Analyst or Associate classes learn the necessary technical and professional skills needed to foster productivity on the job, as well as assist in their integration with the Morgan Stanley Culture.  A strong candidate for this type of role would have an interest in instructional design, possess strong organizational and leadership skills, be creative in helping to develop new curriculum, and be able to gather feedback to constantly improve and retain our Firm's talent.

The focus of the program is to develop core HR competencies. Throughout the summer, on-going feedback from their managers will help Summer Interns develop and hone their skills as the goal is to convert many Summer Analysts to Full Time Analysts after graduation. Additionally, the program provides structured learning and networking opportunities including a Senior Speaker Series, Mentorship Program, philanthropic and social networking events and Group Project.  These projects are aimed at developing a solution for an existing enterprise or real-time Human Resources Challenge and will be presented to HR Senior Management and the Division at large during the last week of the internship.
