The Analyst Programme in Prime Brokerage
How the programme works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

Your role and responsibilities will vary widely depending on which area you join:

  • Client Service Provide operations support for hedge fund managers by reviewing the daily reconciliation exceptions, ensuring clearance and settlement of trades, analysing corporate events, and servicing ad hoc inquiries and requests from clients.
    Sales Create pitch books and perform analysis of business opportunities, learn how hedge funds generate returns and how the financial community services hedge funds.
  • Client Consulting Services Help new funds launch with a range of go-live services and best practices consulting, including finding office space, vendor systems, and project management for the fund launch process.
  • Marketing Conduct data analysis, produce industry research presentations, and create sales materials.
  • Technology Help to draft project plans, specifications, testing plans, and implementation schedules for the planning and execution of internal workflow tools, Prime Brokerage websites, and other client technology.
  • Risk Review client portfolio risk reports and contribute to projects reviewing operational best practices, policies and procedures, and regulatory initiatives.
  • Capital Introductions Provide analytical support for the team as it plans and executes marketing plans to connect clients with potential investors, gather news and market intelligence, and update and maintain the databases that support these activities.
  • Finance Help to analyse trends in client profitability, including fees charged to clients, costs of internal and external financing, and direct and allocated costs.

Launching Your Career
The initial training that you receive on starting the programme

The Analyst Programme begins with two weeks on the Firmwide Institutional Securities Training Programme in London with colleagues from Sales & Trading and peers from other divisions. The training covers financial modeling and capital markets and enables Analysts to grasp a broad understanding of each business in the Institutional Securities group, deepen their capital markets knowledge, and network amongst their Analyst peers.

Afterwards you will undertake the Sales & Trading specific training, which generally comprises:

  • Two weeks of division-specific classroom training
  • Intensive IT training, including Bloomberg, Excel, and desk specific applications
  • Regulatory exam Financial Services Authority (FSA) preparation

In addition to the formal training, the Analyst programme includes the opportunity to hear from experienced professionals in Prime Brokerage, a structured mentor and buddy programme and organised social events. This will enable you to build a network of contacts throughout the division and the firm.

Developing Your Career
What you can expect as you progress through and complete the programme

Prime Brokerage management takes a keen interest in your progress as an Analyst, and will look to you for fresh perspectives and new ideas. You will be encouraged to take on responsibility quickly with a view to developing your career. To help in this process, you will be assigned a mentor to ease your transition to the corporate environment, provide career guidance and day-to-day advice, and to connect you with the Morgan Stanley network.

Additional training will enable you to enhance your product knowledge as well as develop your professional skills. We also support you in taking language classes and financial examinations, such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and FSA qualifications, where necessary.

Requirements

An outstanding academic record with a minimum 2.1 honours degree or equivalent and a keen interest in the financial markets. Candidates from all degree disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Selection Process

The selection process consists of two stages, including interviews and an assessment centre. At the assessment centre, candidates can expect to be assessed in a number of exercises including a group exercise, a numerical reasoning test, and interviews with group management.

Alongside our Analyst and Summer Analyst Programmes, Prime Brokerage offers a 48-week Industrial Placement Programme starting each July. The programme will provide you with in-depth exposure to the finance industry and help you make an informed choice about your future career.

How the programme works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

The Prime Brokerage Industrial Placement Programme will run for a year starting each July and is for undergraduates who are completing a four-year degree with a year out in industry as a requirement for their degree. The programme typically offers you the opportunity to work in a variety of product areas, providing a clear understanding of how the Prime Brokerage operates as a whole.

Following an initial period of training and induction, you will be assigned to a team where you would typically work alongside experienced professionals at all levels.
