Your Opportunity as an Analyst in Investment Management

An overview of this programme’s objectives and how you can benefit

Our employees are our essential advantage in delivering world-class service to our clients and positive results to our shareholders.  To accomplish these goals, we seek to attract and retain the most talented and innovative individuals from across the industry.  By fostering creativity, encouraging debate and recognising achievement, we have created an environment that challenges individuals to achieve their best performance for the benefit of our clients.

Investment Management is a key business for Morgan Stanley. The firm has made a strong commitment to attracting and retaining the best talent in the business, so it is an extremely exciting time to be a part of Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM) with its entrepreneurial environment. What you gain in depth and breadth of experience can only be matched by the high level of responsibility you are given early in your career with Morgan Stanley. Intensive and challenging, the MSIM Analyst programme is designed to allow maximum exposure to a variety of job functions within the division.

The Analyst Programme in Investment Management
How the programme works and the day-to-day experience you can expect

The MSIM Analyst Programme offers opportunities for Analysts across a range of teams within our London office and Continental Europe. Analysts may assume significant responsibilities, have the potential to contribute directly to business objectives, and regularly interact with key business leaders.

Investments

MSIM's investment teams offer our clients global investment experience across the spectrum of traditional financial assets—stocks, bonds and money market instruments—and alternative investments—private and liquid markets, senior loans and absolute return strategies.  The investment team members undertake a variety of roles which include portfolio managers, portfolio specialists, research analysts (fundamental and quantitative) and strategy specialists.

Sales, Marketing and Product Development

MSIM's Sales, Marketing and Product Development teams work in partnership with the investment teams to offer products and services that are tailored for distinct client segments, including the institutional and intermediary markets.  The Sales teams cultivate relationships with both current and prospective clients; the Marketing team is responsible for providing tools and services that promote our investment capabilities to prospective clients, educating our clients about our diverse strategies and empowering the sales force to win business and market share; the Product Development team analyses and reviews product opportunities, leads projects to modify the existing product line and conducts industry research on competitor products and platforms to assess competitive positioning and pricing.

Launching Your Career
The initial training that you receive on starting the programme

The Analyst Programme begins with four weeks of intensive classroom training on the Firmwide Institutional Training Programme with peers from across Investment Banking, Sales & Trading and Private Wealth Management.  A structured curriculum of training covers the essentials of accounting, Excel modeling, and computer software for quantitative analysis. In addition, there is specific Investment Management financial training, which includes: Introduction to Equity, Fixed Income and Alternatives; Thinking on a Portfolio Basis; Conventional Assets and Investment Styles; and Alternative Assets and Derivatives. The Analyst Programme incorporates case studies, simulations and opportunities to meet with senior management to offer a complete perspective on Morgan Stanley's culture.

In addition to classroom training, our programme offers Analysts the unique opportunity to develop relationships with their peers, as well as to build a strong network with professionals throughout the division. Once your initial training is complete, you will take up your first placement in the business.

Developing Your Career
What you can expect as you progress through and complete the programme

The MSIM Analyst Programme is deliberately small, which means that you may enjoy a relatively high profile within the division and benefit from very high levels of personal input from experienced professionals. As part of your integration into MSIM, you would be assigned a buddy to help to ensure the assimilation process is a positive and valuable experience. You will also be assigned a mentor who will ease your transition into the corporate environment. Mentors can provide career guidance, serve as sounding boards and connect each Analyst to the broader Morgan Stanley network.

We view career development as an ongoing process, and we offer our employees a broad array of challenging, developmental opportunities, both on the job and within a training environment. Additional training throughout the year will enable you to enhance your product knowledge as well as develop your professional skills. We also support you in taking language classes and financial examinations, such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), where necessary.

If you are successful in your role at the conclusion of the two-year training programme, you may be extended an offer to continue as a member of one of the MSIM teams.
